Poker Rooms

Poker room is a special place, where gamblers gather together at a certain time and play poker against each other or against the dealer. Poker rooms may be either real (in land-based casinos) or virtual (at online poker sites). Nevertheless, both types of rooms are common in one thing - all people come there to play poker.

Poker room may host both professional players and beginners. Obviously, more experienced gamblers act like predators seeking their prey - weaker players. If the weaker players don't escape their table in time, their chips will eventually be captured by the stronger players.

The poker rooms are fairly stable, though it is sometimes imbalanced. Some places have too many strong participants, reasonably named 'sharks' in poker circles. At the same time, there is a lack of newcomers at other poker rooms. As usually, such a difference is a matter of geographical location. In some areas, where poker enjoys wide popularity, there are a lot of skilful players. Other places, such as Vegas, constantly draw a lot of unprepared rookies who believe in luck.

However, the internet eliminates any geographic barriers; the only major distinctive feature of different e-poker rooms is its participants. If there are plenty of newcomers at a certain poker room, then the sharks should be able to quickly win over them.

However, in reality many people stay loyal to a select few online poker rooms, and some poker rooms have much softer games than others. Some people unnecessarily play games that mainly are catering for sharks, while there are much easier games elsewhere. This is particularly the case with ring games for both Limit Hold'em and No-Limit Hold'em. These games are popular at almost all internet card rooms, especially the low and mid-limits. Unless someone wants to play high limits (higher than $15-30 or $2-4 no-limit), there is generally a wide variety of places from which to choose.

Nevertheless, some internet card rooms have the larger number of beginners than others. There are several reasons for this. First, some internet card rooms in different ways 'protect' the newcomers more than others. For example, they limit players to playing one game at once. Inexperienced players tend to only play one game at once anyway, but sharks tend to play multiple games at once in order to maximize their win rate. Thus, the one-table rule has the effect of increasing the presence of inexperienced players.

For example, suppose there are 40 players at a card room. Ten are sharks and thirty are inexperienced players. If players are restricted to one table, then there will be a 3:1 rookie to shark ratio. If players can play a maximum of three tables, it is very likely that the sharks will play three tables at once while their preys will still play at only one. So under the three-table scenario, there are effectively 30 sharks playing (ten times, three tables), while there are still only 30 beginners. So the ratio becomes 1/1.

Another situation that can imbalance the poker room is if a card room is owned by an online casino. These poker rooms have a lot of cross-over traffic of casino players trying out poker. These players do not tend to play as well as people only interested in poker, so these rooms have an added stream of newbies.

Advertising is another factor to influence the membership of the poker rooms. Some internet card rooms advertise much more than others. Their ads have been on television and various magazines, so the casual players are more attracted to these places.

The strength of the competition at a poker room can also change over time. If a poker room suddenly becomes more popular, the games will probably become softer. In contrast, if the poker room is losing players, it is likely that the players that are leaving are the less-skilled players. Thus, only the sharks would remain.

Understanding the principle how poker rooms are working is important for good game selection. Finding soft games is as important to winning as solid poker skills. If you plan on seriously becoming a strong poker player, then you should scope out the various poker rooms available to you. Also, monitor the poker rooms you play at to see if you believe the competition is becoming harder or softer.

Another thing the beginner should know is the opportunity to fall a prey to cheaters. One of the easiest ways to cheat at poker with a partner or many partners is collusion. Unlike mechanics based on manipulating cards or chips in violation of the rules, the cheaters, involved in collusion, play differently against one or more players. The gravity of such cheating ranges from the subconscious to the conspiratorial. The first common form of collusion is soft play when players are failing to bet or raise in a situation that would normally merit it because of your opponent. The second is whipsawing, where partners at opposite ends of the table raise and reraise each other to trap players in between. The third is dumping, or deliberately losing to a partner (perhaps someone you are backing financially or with whom you have traded a percentage stake). The cheaters usually share information between them signalling about it in any possible ways.

Obviously, two people sharing information about their hands enjoy a great advantage over the other players. If you do not believe this, deal out a few poker hands, but deal yourself two. The idea is that these players signal one another and only play the better of the two hands. Signals can take many forms, from the placement of the chips on the cards to morse code tappings on the table. The key ingredient in all signalling systems is the ability to be repeated unobtrusively. In order for this advantage to make money it has to be done many times without someone realizing it. In a game, where people are always watching each other, this can prove problematic. When a cheat is signalling the value of his hand to his partner, he is also signalling the value of his hand to everyone at the table. The result of a system of signals being figured out is nothing short of financial disaster. Some games are more susceptible to this kind of cheating than others: in Five-card stud and Lowball, for example, signalling the rank of just one card can give another player sufficient information to make many otherwise difficult decisions.
